A: KNODE Search® (search.knodeinc.com) is a Cloud-based tool which provides a comprehensive view of life sciences experts and their scientific content - publications, patents, grants, clinical trials, etc. The KNODE system automatically aggregates scientific content from publically available databases into individual researcher expertise profiles. Integrating high quality, expert scientific content is the foundation of KNODE.

A: KNODE indexes information from U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) and U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, including:

  • MEDLINE / PubMed journal articles since 1995
  • Clinical trials from ClinicalTrials.gov since 1999
  • Grant projects since fiscal year 1985
  • Issued patents in biomedicine granted since 2005
  • Published applications in biomedicine since 2005

A: There are a wide variety of use cases, such as:

  • Collaboration: Kick off a collaboration by quikly identifying key internal and external experts and related scientific content
  • Grant Proposal Review: Identify internal and/or external subject matter experts for review and critique of grant proposals prior to submission
  • Interdisciplinary Team Formation: Identify relevant experts from across disparate disciplines and organizations for a new project

A: Content items are assigned to expert profiles by automated processes that favor accuracy over completeness as a basis for determining expertise.

A: Yes. Register for a free user account. After activation you will be able to claim your profile, review and edit your information and respective scientific content. Click the "Claim this profile" button. Any discrepancies with your profile can be reported to KNODE using the "Report an Issue" links or by sending a message to support@knodeinc.com. Please note that the system-generated version of your profile will remain in KNODE, as these profiles are aggregated on an ongoing basis.

A: Tag clouds are derived by algorithms that examine each author's entire list of publications, patents, and other scientific content. Claiming and editing your profile isn't necessary, but ensures the highest level of accuracy for this process. To suggest additional keyword topics or phrases, enter them in the "Professional Interests" field in your profile. In the future, KNODE will start to take those into consideration as part of our automated processes.

A: KNODE automatically generates and updates expert profiles on a regular basis to include recent content, eliminating the requirement for manual editing.

A: When KNODE does a general search, it looks at a variety of data fields: expertise tags, abstracts, affiliations, names, co-authors, keywords, etc. When the term is strongly biomedical (i.e., right out of tag clouds), search results will return the top experts with the strongest expertise profile using KNODE algorithms. In the case of a person or location name, KNODE must consider the possible meanings (e.g., is "white" a color, a last name, part of the phrase like "white matter"), so search results will be mixed and the order of the results won't be based entirely on expertise terms. If you are searching for a specific researcher, select "Expert name" next to the KNODE search box.

A: University and other research institutions have partnered with KNODE Inc. to provide access for faculty, staff, and affiliates to the KNODE knowledge base. KNODE can also create a "portal of researchers," as a showcase of the most relevant experts inside your organization, along with their associated scientific content.

Searching for experts and expertise in KNODE

KNODE is a large scale biomedical knowledge base encompassing millions of academic and industry experts and organizations, plus their relevant content. Unlike when you use general-purpose web search engines, with KNODE you are searching specifically for people, organizational affiliations, and expertise. The KNODE system utilizes automatically generated and updated profiles of experts - much as travel websites automatically categorize destinations, current trips, and vacation possibilities. With KNODE you are looking to identify experts and key opinion leaders, emerging researchers and their work, or new business development possibilities, indexed by domain-specific expertise terms and topics.

Beta Testing and Feedback

KNODE expert profiles are automatically generated using sophisticated semantic mining and machine learning algorithms. During the Beta period you may notice errors or inaccuracies. We appreciate your patience as we continue to improve our system. If you have specific feedback, please pass it along via the "Feedback" or "Report an Issue" links. In the future you will be able to submit KNODE profile corrections directly.

  • National Library of Medicine MEDLINE / PubMed journal articles citations from 1995 and later
  • Federally and privately supported clinical trials from ClinicalTrials.gov for studies open from 1999 and later
  • Grant projects funded by NIH and other agencies of the Department of Health and Human Services from fiscal year 1985 and later.

  • Issued patents in classifications relevant to biomedicine granted from 2005 and later
  • Patent applications in classifications relevant to biomedicine published from 2005 and later.

KNODE will be updated periodically. It may not reflect the most current and accurate biomedical/scientific data available and is subject to errors and omissions by 3rd parties.

The KNODE Search® box

You can search by expertise, expert name, or affiliation. To find people by expertise, enter one or more biomedical terms or topics into the KNODE search box. Multiple terms will be searched and retrieved together, for example:

monoclonal antibodies will retrieve experts and expert content on monoclonal AND antibodies. Quotes can be used to group search words into phrases, for example:

"monoclonal antibodies" will retrieve experts and expert content on that specific topic.

Adding + or - can be used to denote terms to include or exclude, for example:

dementia -vascular will search for experts and content on dementia, but exclude those with the keyword vascular

A drop-down list next to the search box allows you to alter the type of search from expertise terms to look instead for either an expert name or organizational affiliation.

Narrow your search with faceted browsing

When KNODE displays search results for expertise, names, or expert profiles, one or more navigation aids are provided along the side of the page. When you click on an item in a facet, the original search results are narrowed down into a smaller set of entries. You can then click on an additional facet item to continue to refine to very specific search results. Similarly, when viewing an expert profile, clicking on one or more expertise terms will reduce the displayed list of relevant content items.

expertise keyword: important topics, terms, and phrases, commonly found in source data - search within displayed results to progressively filter down to experts of interest

affiliation: organizations, universities, or companies, determined from expert publication history - used to identify a group of experts from a specific college or business

location: countries determined from affiliation - allows you to focus your search on a particular region or geographic area.

KNODE Rank®

The KNODE system will rank expertise based on the relevance, quality, and quantity of a researchers' content within each of the tens of thousands of topics and keywords we track. We rely on a combination of existing dictionaries, lexicons, natural language processing to extract relevant terms, and statistical techniques to identify and cluster related content. More weight is assigned to content from first and last authors (for publications), content appearing in more prestigious journals, and content generated more recently.

Narrow your search using content filters

You can adjust how KNODE Rank treats different types of content using filter sliders. There are individual sliders for Papers, Grants, Trials, and Patents. When these sliders are in the left-hand "normal" position, KNODE Rank behaves in the usual way. As a content slider is moved to the right, researchers are filtered for higher item counts for that type of content. In other words, search results will be increasingly narrowed down to those experts with greater amounts of content.

Content matching

Content items are assigned to expert profiles by automated processes that favor accuracy over completeness as a basis for determining expertise. While viewing a KNODE profile, adjust the content matching slider to display additional possible content using relaxed criteria.

The following KNODE features require that you register for a free user account and log into the system -

Star experts

As you search and view collections of experts you may want to keep track of people of interest. When you click the star next to an expert name, KNODE will remember these selections. Experts previously selected with stars can then be displayed together on a consolidate page by clicking on the "view starred" link in the search bar any time you log back into KNODE.

Claim your profile

If you are a researcher with an automatically-generated KNODE profile, you can claim that profile. You can then augment and make modifications to what is presented by KNODE. For example, authors can remove publications, change their affiliation and title, or add a professional summary. You may only claim a single KNODE profile.
